"Finnegan's Wake" is a New York Irish ballad which tells of the death of Tim Finnegan, a builder's labourer who, fond of the bottle, falls drunk from his ladder at too great a height.

Waywords and Meansigns: Recreating Finnegans Wake [in its whole wholume] is an international project setting James Joyce's novel Finnegans Wake to music. Waywords and Meansigns has released two editions of audio, each offering an unabridged musical adaptation of Joyce's book. Famously, Finnegans Wake begins and ends in mid sentence: ‘A way a lone a last a loved a long the’ – leading us back to ‘riverrun, past Eve and Adam’s ’ Notes by Roger Marsh. A complete recording of Finnegans Wake would require 16–20 compact discs. What we offer here amounts to about a quarter of the book (in terms of quantity.

A Reader’s Guide to Finnegans Wake. New York: Farrar, A good chapter-by-chapter guide, with a lot of interesting exegesis and a great sense of humor. See also Tindall’s other books (the chapters on the Wake in his Reader’s Guide to Joyce are especially helpful). Senn, Fritz. “A Reading Exercise in Finnegans Wake.”   Nothing. None of Finnegans Wake means anything. The whole book is one long, elaborate (and some would say unbelievably pretentious) exercise in wordplay. Virtually every word (including the first one) is either made up or a pun, almost invariably.

In my opinion, Burgess does a fine job of keeping the most memorable parts of Finnegans Wake while cutting out some of the verbiage (which does get a bit onerous for me about three quarters of the way through the book, particularly in the chapter set in Earwicker's pub). Burgess seems like the kind of person you would want for this kind of project: he has written a book about /5.

Though James Joyce is safely lodged in the pantheon of modern literature, he still occasions impudent remarks. At last, one of the great question marks of the literary world is to have an answer, for here is the book on which Joyce has spent the 17 years that have elapsed since Ulysses turned the writing profession upside down.
